We were approached by Hugh Garrord, owner of Purdicom, to deliver EV charging for staff at their Wantage headquarters. Purdicom is a UK IT technology distributor specialising in wireless networking and cybersecurity, operating from Mitchell House at Woolley Barns, a converted historic barn in rural Oxfordshire. Staff were increasingly switching to electric vehicles and needed reliable workplace charging. The site had multiple user types who would need access, from permanent staff to directors and visiting guests. Hugh wanted a system that could grow with demand, but the building's character was non-negotiable. Whatever went in had to look right against the old brickwork.

Preserving the Character of a Historic Barn

Purdicom operates from Mitchell House at Woolley Barns, a historic barn conversion in Wantage. The building's appeal comes from exposed brickwork and traditional architecture that has been carefully maintained over the years. Any EV charging infrastructure needed to complement this aesthetic, not work against it. Standard armoured cable running between charge points would have left visible cabling across the barn walls and between bays. For a building where the visual character had been preserved through years of careful management, that approach was not an option. Hugh Garrord made it clear from the outset that whatever we installed had to look like it belonged there. The infrastructure needed to enhance the site, not compromise it.

Multiple User Types on One Managed System

The charging network needed to support different user types across the business. Staff, directors, and visiting guests all required access to the chargers, each with their own billing arrangement. A single system had to manage these groups without creating admin complexity for the business. Without a platform to handle user tiers and billing automatically, the company would need to track usage manually and reconcile costs across different groups. That was not practical for a growing technology distributor with better things to focus on. The system needed to handle access control, session logging, and financial reporting from day one without any manual intervention.

Three Supplies and 17 Points Under Load Management

The site had three separate electrical supplies that needed to serve all 17 infrastructure points. Each supply required open PEN fault protection devices to meet current regulations. Distributing the load across three independent supplies while maintaining safe operating limits demanded careful circuit design from the outset. Getting the load management right was critical. With 17 points drawing from three supplies, the system needed dynamic load balancing to prevent any single circuit from being overloaded. The configuration had to work not just for the initial seven chargers, but for the full 17 points as future-ready bays are activated over time.

Galvanised Conduit and Low-Profile Chargers

We designed the cable routing using galvanised conduit running across the building's exterior walls. The conduit gives a clean, industrial finish that sits naturally against the barn's brickwork and traditional construction. Each charger is a low-profile Easee unit, keeping the visual footprint to a minimum. The combination of galvanised conduit and the Easee's compact form factor creates a premium look against the old stonework. There is no cable tray or bulky containment, just neat conduit drops feeding each charge point directly. The installation looks deliberate and permanent, as though it was always part of the building. Visitors to the site often comment on how well the infrastructure works with the barn's character rather than against it.

Managed Platform with Tiered Access and Billing

Our management platform handles all user types across the site. Staff, directors, and guests each have their own access tier with billing managed automatically in the background. Drivers can start a session using an RFID card or the app. Every charging session is logged, and costs are allocated to the correct user group without manual intervention. The platform dashboard gives the business full visibility of usage patterns, energy consumption, and costs at any time. There is no invoice chasing, no manual reconciliation, and no admin burden. The system runs itself.

Future-Ready Network Proven in 30 Minutes

We installed seven chargers initially and prepared ten future-ready points, giving the site 17 covered bays from day one. Each future point was fully cabled, terminated, and tested during the original installation so that activation would require nothing more than fitting the charger unit itself. The value of this approach has already been proven. Purdicom has since activated three additional future points, bringing the total to ten live chargers. Each conversion was completed, commissioned, and live on the management platform within 30 minutes. No re-cabling. No groundworks. No additional electrical work. Seven more bays remain ready for activation as demand grows, and each one will follow the same 30-minute process.

The results

Project outcomes

Purdicom now has ten operational Easee 22kW chargers with seven future-ready points across 17 bays. Galvanised conduit runs neatly across the barn's exterior walls, and the low-profile Easee units sit cleanly against the historic brickwork. Three separate electrical supplies serve the network with open PEN fault protection at each location, and dynamic load balancing distributes demand evenly across all circuits.

The £10,950 Workplace Charging Scheme grant reduced the upfront cost significantly for the business. The installation was completed in five business days with no groundworks required and no disruption to daily operations. The future-ready design has already delivered value: three additional chargers were activated from prepared points, each taking approximately 30 minutes to fit, commission, and bring online.

Staff now have reliable workplace charging with access via RFID card or the app. The management platform handles all billing automatically, so Hugh and the team have no admin overhead to manage. The system serves staff, directors, and guests from a single platform with full usage visibility. Seven more bays are ready for activation as the team continues to switch to electric vehicles. The conduit infrastructure means the building's heritage character has been preserved throughout.
