Route One approached us to install EV charging at their distribution centre in Acton Turville, South Gloucestershire. The company had already invested in a SolarEdge solar PV system on the roof and wanted their new charging infrastructure to make the most of that existing generation. Route One needed chargers for staff vehicles today, with the ability to scale as more of their team switched to electric. The site sits just off the M4 and operates as both a warehouse and office, with constant activity through the working week. Any installation had to work around the business, integrate with the existing solar system, and deliver a network that could grow without repeated disruption.

Installing at Height in an Active Warehouse

Route One's distribution centre operates five days a week with constant stock movement, forklift traffic, and picking operations across the warehouse floor. Shutting down operations for an extended installation was not an option for the business. The Wieland Podis flat cable system needed to run at high level along the inside face of the external wall, spanning the full length of the unit. This meant working at height directly above active warehouse zones. Our engineers needed safe access without blocking the aisles and racking below, and the work had to be planned around Route One's operational schedule to keep disruption to a minimum.

Integrating EV Charging with an Existing Solar Array

Route One already had a SolarEdge solar PV system on the roof generating renewable energy for the building. The company wanted their new EV chargers to use surplus solar energy wherever possible, reducing grid dependence and maximising their existing investment. Connecting a new EV charging network to an existing solar system is not straightforward. The load management device needed to monitor both the incoming grid supply and solar generation in real time, then intelligently route surplus energy to the chargers. Getting this wrong could mean the chargers drawing from the grid while solar energy went unused, or the building's supply being overloaded during peak generation.

Future Proofing for a Growing Fleet

Route One needed three chargers today, but their fleet plans meant the infrastructure had to scale. The site has 13 parking bays that would eventually need charging capability as more staff switched to electric vehicles. Installing three chargers now and retrofitting ten more later using traditional cabling would mean repeated disruption, additional containment, and compounding labour costs each time. The infrastructure needed to support easy expansion from day one, allowing additional chargers to be added quickly and affordably as demand grows.

High Level Wieland Podis Flat Cable System

We installed a Wieland Podis modular flat cable system on cable tray at high level along the inside face of the external wall. The flat cable runs the full length of the unit, with tap-off connection modules at each bay position. Two circuits serve 10 bays from a dedicated distribution board with capacity for future expansion. Three Landis+Gyr Inch Pro 22kW chargers connect via plug-and-play connection modules. Adding future chargers is as simple as clipping a new module onto the flat cable and mounting the charger. No new cabling, no additional containment, and no disruption to the warehouse floor.

Solar Integrated Load Management

We installed an Etrel Load Guard that monitors both the incoming grid supply and the SolarEdge solar generation. The system calculates surplus solar energy in real time and diverts it directly to the chargers. When the solar array generates more than the building needs, the excess flows to whichever vehicles are plugged in. During periods of high building demand or low generation, the Load Guard balances power across the chargers to prevent the supply from being exceeded. The result is lower charging costs, reduced grid dependence, and a genuine return on Route One's existing solar investment.

Charging Management Platform with Hardwired Connectivity

We set up a charging management platform to handle access control, session tracking, and real time monitoring of the entire network. Staff charge via the app or RFID, with every session logged and visible on the dashboard. Each charger connects via a hardwired network connection, giving reliable uptime on the backend system and load management. If a charger goes offline or shows a fault, our team is alerted remotely and can often resolve the issue without a site visit. We handled the EV Infrastructure Grant application and secured £7,550 in funding to reduce the upfront cost.

The results

Project outcomes

Route One now has three operational Landis+Gyr Inch Pro 22kW chargers serving their team, with infrastructure in place for ten more across 13 bays. The Wieland Podis flat cable system runs at high level along the warehouse wall, keeping the floor space completely clear for operations. Each future charger connects via a plug-and-play module, meaning expansion takes hours rather than days.

The £7,550 EV Infrastructure Grant covered a significant portion of the upfront investment. The installation was completed in five days with no disruption to warehouse operations. The solar integration means Route One's existing SolarEdge array now feeds surplus generation directly to the chargers, reducing both energy costs and grid dependence.

The charging management platform handles all access and monitoring automatically. Route One can track usage, manage costs, and control access from a single dashboard. Our team monitors the network remotely and handles any maintenance, so Route One has no ongoing admin burden. The system is built to grow with their fleet, and when they need more chargers, adding them to the existing flat cable infrastructure is straightforward and affordable.
