Ohme ePod

The smart tariff specialist. The ePod talks to Intelligent Octopus Go natively, arrives with its own SIM so your WiFi never matters, and does its job from a case not much bigger than a paperback. If your priority is the cheapest possible miles, this is the shortest route.

Our honest take on the Ohme ePod.

Ohme built its reputation on one thing: squeezing every penny out of smart tariffs. The ePod is that idea in its smallest form. It integrates with Intelligent Octopus Go natively, which means the scheduling is tight, reliable and hands off from day one.

The built in SIM is a quiet advantage. Chargers that rely on household WiFi are only as reliable as the router in the hallway. The ePod carries its own connection with three years of data included, so smart charging keeps working whatever your broadband is doing.

The flip side matters, and we are upfront about it. The ePod is cellular only, with no WiFi fallback. If mobile signal is weak where you park, the app and smart charging can drop out. We check signal strength at the survey before recommending it, and if your spot is a dead zone we will point you at a WiFi connected charger instead.

It is not the prettiest unit on this page and there is no screen, but at this price, doing this job, it is very hard to argue with. For pure tariff driven charging it is the sharpest tool we fit.

Where it wins

  • Native Intelligent Octopus Go integration, the gold standard
  • Built in SIM with 3 years of data, WiFi never matters
  • Small, light and quick to install neatly
  • Solar Boost charges from your excess solar via the app

What to watch

  • Cellular only, so it needs good mobile signal where you park
  • No screen, everything happens in the app
  • OVO Charge Anytime support was dropped in 2025
  • Plain looks next to the Hypervolt or Easee

Ohme ePod questions, answered.

Does the Ohme ePod work with Intelligent Octopus Go?

Yes, natively. Ohme and Octopus have one of the tightest integrations in the market. The ePod reads your tariff directly and schedules charging into the cheapest slots automatically, typically around 8p per kWh overnight.

Does the Ohme ePod need WiFi?

No. The ePod has a built in SIM with three years of free data, so it manages its own internet connection. It keeps smart charging even if your home WiFi is unreliable or the charger is out of range.

The trade off is that it depends entirely on mobile signal. There is no WiFi fallback, so if coverage where you park is poor, app connectivity and smart charging can suffer. We check signal strength at the survey and will tell you straight if your parking spot is not suited to it.

Is the Ohme ePod tethered or untethered?

Untethered. It has a Type 2 socket that works with any charging cable, and Ohme offers 5 m and 8 m cables as optional extras if you need one.

Can the Ohme ePod charge from solar panels?

Yes. The Solar Boost feature in the Ohme app uses your excess solar generation to charge the car. It reads your surplus through a CT clamp, which we fit as part of the installation, and starts working from just 0.72 kW of excess, topping up with grid power to reach the car’s 1.44 kW minimum. Above 1.44 kW of surplus, the car charges on sunshine alone.

If you have a larger solar array and want the deepest solar integration, also look at the myenergi Zappi, which was designed around solar first.
