How Long Does Workplace EV Charger Installation Take in the UK?

TL;DR

The time on site depends on the number of chargers and the type of work involved. A 10 charger installation in an underground car park typically takes 5 to 7 business days. The same number in a surface car park with civil works takes 10 to 14 business days. From initial enquiry to site survey is normally 24 to 48 hours. Once you approve the proposal and the grant application is in, we file the DNO notification and schedule the works. Everything happens in one mobilisation. We do not split electrical upgrades and charger installation into separate visits.

How the Process Works

Enquiry to site survey (24 to 48 hours). We can do a remote desktop assessment from photos and plans, but for commercial installations we prefer to visit the site. This lets us check the full scope and make sure everything aligns with what you are looking for. We typically get to site within a day or two of your enquiry.

Proposal and approval. You receive a detailed proposal with options, grant eligibility, hardware recommendations, and a realistic project timeline. Once you go ahead, we move straight to the next steps.

Grant application (no delay). If your project qualifies for the EV Infrastructure Grant, we send you the application documentation. You create an account, enter your site information, and the application lands in our portal. We handle everything from there. For smaller installations that fall under the Workplace Charging Scheme only, you apply online for a voucher code and pass it to us. Either way, the grant funding is deducted directly from your invoice so you only ever pay the reduced amount. This step does not hold up the project.

DNO notification. We file a notification with the distribution network operator to let them know what chargers are being installed. This is standard and does not hold up the project. A new electrical supply is a separate process entirely. If your site needs a supply upgrade, that application goes to the DNO and can take 4 to 12 weeks depending on the operator and scope of work. We identify this at survey stage and submit early to keep the project moving.

Installation. We programme everything into one coordinated mobilisation from start to finish. Distribution board upgrades, cabling, containment, load management, civil works, charger mounting, and commissioning. By the final day you have fully functioning chargers connected to your management backend, grant paperwork filed, and staff ready to start charging.

What Determines the Time on Site

The two biggest factors are the number of chargers and whether civil works are required.

Underground or internal car parks. Wall mounted chargers with containment and cabling running along walls and ceilings. No groundworks needed. A 10 charger installation with a new EV distribution board and load management typically takes 5 to 7 business days.

Surface car parks. Trenching, excavation for cabling, pedestal foundations, enclosures for distribution boards, and reinstatement of tarmac or paving. The civil works alone take 3 to 4 days. A 10 charger surface installation typically takes 10 to 14 business days.

Smaller projects. A few wall mounted chargers close to the existing supply can be completed more quickly, but the timeline still depends on the underlying structure of the site. There is no one size fits all answer, which is why the site survey matters.

Both the Workplace Charging Scheme and EV Infrastructure Grant are due to close on 31 March 2026. No replacement schemes have been announced. Starting your project earlier secures your funding and gives room for any unexpected delays.
