Can EV Chargers Be Installed During Term Time?

TL;DR

Yes, term time installation works when the safeguarding is planned properly: fenced work areas, escorted engineers, and no unsupervised contact with pupils. That said, most schools choose half terms and holidays because it is simpler for everyone. A typical installation takes two to five days, which fits comfortably inside a half term break.

Get in touch with our team and we will talk you through your options.

How Term Time Installs Actually Run

The grant scheme says nothing about when work happens, so the timetable is the school’s call. When term time is unavoidable, the arrangements are the same ones your site team applies to any contractor. The work area is fenced off, usually a corner of the car park. Engineers sign in, wear identification, and are escorted anywhere outside the compound. Deliveries and noisy work are timed around the school day, and drop off and pick up traffic is never obstructed.

The car park loses a few spaces for a few days. That is normally the biggest real disruption.

The DBS Question, Answered Straight

OZEV does not require DBS checks for charger installation. Schools set their own policy, and the usual standard is that contractors with no unsupervised pupil contact do not need them, provided segregation is managed. Some trusts require checks for all contractors regardless.

We work to whichever policy your school runs. Our engineers carry DBS checks where trusts require them, and where they do not, we design the job so the question never arises, compound working, escorted movement, holiday scheduling. Tell us your policy at the survey and the method statement will match it.

Why Holidays Still Win

Trenching across a car park with 400 families using it twice a day is possible. Doing it in the first week of August is easier, faster and cheaper. Groundworks happen without traffic management, the whole car park is available, and commissioning finishes before anyone returns.

Our schools work books holiday slots months ahead, especially summer. If your grant voucher has a redemption deadline, tell us early and we will hold the window.
