Will a School's Electrical Supply Support EV Chargers?

TL;DR

Almost always, and schools are better placed than most sites. Kitchens, heating and IT mean school buildings typically run three phase supplies with real capacity, and the demand pattern helps too: charging peaks while cars sit parked all day, and load management automatically eases charging during the lunchtime kitchen surge. The survey confirms the numbers before anything is promised.

What the Assessment Looks At

Three things. The rating of the school’s incoming supply, the spare capacity after the building’s maximum demand, and the distance from the intake to the car park. School kitchens are the co load that matters, a full catering kitchen pulls serious current for two hours a day, and electric heating adds winter load on some sites.

None of this usually blocks a project. It sets the design: how many sockets can run at full rate simultaneously, and whether load management or a supply upgrade is the right answer when ambitions outgrow the spare capacity.

Load Management Does the Heavy Lifting

Smart load management watches the whole site’s demand and adjusts charging in real time. When the kitchen fires up at eleven, charging eases back. When the site quietens at three, it ramps up again. Staff cars parked for seven hours never notice, they are full by home time either way.

That is how a school runs ten sockets on a supply that could not feed ten chargers at full rate simultaneously, and it is included in the systems we install rather than sold as an extra.

When the DNO Gets Involved

Every installation is notified to the local network operator, and larger school projects sometimes trigger a proper capacity assessment. If a genuine supply upgrade is ever needed, usually only on big multi phase rollouts or minibus depot charging, it is priced and programmed before you commit, not discovered mid project. We run that conversation with the network operator as part of the job.
