How Does a School Apply for the EV Charging Grant?

TL;DR

Four steps. Book a site survey with an OZEV authorised installer, the scheme requires this before you apply. Submit the application on the government's Find a Grant service using your school's institution reference number and a school domain email. Receive vouchers on approval. Install, and the installer redeems the vouchers so the school only pays the after grant balance.

Step by Step, With Who Does What

The survey comes first because the application asks for it. An OZEV authorised installer, that is us, visits the site, confirms the electrical capacity, agrees charger positions and produces the quote the application is built on. Free, takes a morning, and doubles as your project design.

The application itself is the school’s to submit, it must come from a school domain email, but the content is ours to prepare. You need the institution reference number, the SEED number for schools, and the survey details. Most business managers spend under half an hour on it with our pack in front of them.

Approval issues vouchers against the sockets applied for. From there the timeline is ours: installation booked into your preferred window, commissioning, and voucher redemption. The grant money never passes through the school’s accounts, the invoice simply arrives 75 percent smaller.

Timescales and Deadlines

Approval typically takes days to a couple of weeks. Vouchers carry a redemption window, so apply when you are ready to proceed rather than speculatively. The scheme itself runs until 31 March 2027.

One trap to avoid: schools that applied before 1 April 2026 at the old £2,500 rate must redeem by 30 September 2026 to keep it. If your school is holding pre April vouchers, installation scheduling is now the urgent part, and we can prioritise those jobs.

What Governors Will Ask

Two questions come up in every governors’ meeting: what does it cost after the grant, and who maintains it. The survey answers the first with a fixed figure. The second is covered by warranty plus our maintenance service, the same one our commercial sites run on, with annual reports written for exactly this audience.
