Can Hotels Claim the Workplace Charging Scheme?

TL;DR

Yes. Hotels, B&Bs, holiday parks and campsites are all eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme: 75 percent off purchase and installation, up to £500 per socket and 40 sockets, until 31 March 2027. Better still, small accommodation businesses get a special exemption: guests can use the grant funded sockets, a freedom standard businesses do not get.

The exemption is the part most hospitality operators never hear about. OZEV’s guidance explicitly includes hotels and similar accommodation, short stay accommodation and camping grounds, and for those businesses there is no restriction on who may use the parking or the chargers. Your guests can plug in, and you can charge them for it.

What You Need to Qualify

Dedicated off street parking associated with the premises, which nearly every hotel and park has. An OZEV authorised installer, which is us. And the application itself, made online, with vouchers issued on approval that stay valid for 180 days, so apply when you are ready to install rather than months ahead.

Larger hotel groups above small business scale sit under the standard rules, staff and fleet use, which still covers the staff car park and any company vehicles. Where the line falls for your business takes us one conversation to confirm.

Worked Example

A 12 room country hotel installs 4 sockets on two pedestals at £5,200. The grant covers 75 percent up to £500 per socket, £2,000 here. The hotel pays £3,200, guests charge overnight at a tariff the hotel sets, and the sockets appear on the charging maps EV drivers plan trips with. Most sites we quote in this shape see the balance recovered through bookings and charging revenue rather than sitting as a cost.
