Does the Warm Homes Loan Scheme Cover Battery Storage?

TL;DR

Yes. Battery storage is an eligible measure under the Warm Homes Loan Scheme, with borrowing capped at £15,000. The scheme rules cover both standalone battery installations and those paired with solar panels. That means you do not need solar on the roof to use it. A battery fitted on its own qualifies in the same way.

What the Scheme Covers on a Battery Install

The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is a subsidised loan for low carbon home upgrades. Battery storage sits firmly on the eligible list, up to a £15,000 loan cap for the measure.

The cover is not limited to the battery unit alone. The rules also allow the parts that make a battery work properly. That includes integration with a solar system where one is present, monitoring apps, and the isolators and protection devices the installation needs. So the loan is designed around a complete, working install, not just the box on the wall.

The standalone point is the one most people miss. Plenty of homes want a battery without solar, charging it from cheap overnight electricity and using that power during the day. The scheme rules cover exactly that. Our own battery storage installation work follows the same logic, which is why the two line up so well.

Why a Battery Loan Makes Sense

A home battery earns its keep on the price gap between cheap and peak electricity. You charge overnight on a low night rate, then run the house on stored power when rates are high. Subsidised borrowing lets you spread the cost of the system while those savings start straight away.

Pair a battery with solar and the case gets stronger. You store what the panels make in the day and use it after dark, rather than selling it back cheaply. Solar and battery each have their own £15,000 cap under the scheme, so the two can be funded together.

What to Know Before You Borrow

A few honest points. No consumer interest rates exist yet. Lenders set them after their products are approved, so nobody can quote you a rate today. The loans come from FCA regulated lenders, not from us and not from the government directly. We install the battery. We do not offer, arrange or advise on the credit.

There is nothing to apply for yet either. The scheme is expected from September 2026, subject to approvals, and the industry expects it could land later in the autumn. If a site is taking your details for the scheme now, it is not the scheme. The move that helps you is a loan ready quote. Ours are dated and itemised, with our MCS certification number and the system size in kW, which is what lenders will want to see.

Correct as of 24 July 2026.
