RELATED: What are the best EV chargers for public locations in the UK?
How Destination Charging Differs from Motorway Charging
Motorway rapid chargers are built for speed. Drivers stop for 20 to 30 minutes, add enough range to reach their destination, and leave. The entire experience is about minimising wait time.
Destination charging works differently. Drivers are already planning to spend time at your venue. A gym session, a shopping trip, a meal out. The car charges during that natural dwell time. There is no waiting around because the driver is doing something else.
This changes the type of charger you need. Motorway sites use rapid and ultra rapid units rated at 50kW to 350kW. Destination sites typically use fast chargers rated at 7kW to 22kW, which cost less to install and run. Some sites add a few rapid chargers alongside the fast units for drivers who need a quicker top up.
Why Venues Are Adding Destination Charging
EV drivers plan journeys around charging availability. A retail park with chargers attracts customers that a competitor without them will lose. That pattern is already well established.
The numbers support it. Average dwell time increases when charging is available. Repeat visits go up. And the chargers themselves generate revenue, either directly through usage fees or indirectly through increased footfall.
Over 90% of EV charging still happens at home. But as the UK’s EV fleet grows beyond 1.8 million vehicles, destination charging is becoming part of the routine. Drivers expect it at the places they visit regularly.

Who Benefits Most
Retail parks and shopping centres see the clearest return. Shoppers charge while they browse. A 90 minute visit on a 22kW charger adds around 55 miles of range. That is enough to make the trip worthwhile for most EV drivers.
Leisure centres and gyms are a natural fit. Members charge during their workout. Hotels offer overnight charging as a guest amenity. Tourist attractions provide a full charge over a day visit.
Car park operators monetise underused spaces. The chargers turn a static asset into an active revenue stream without changing how the car park operates.
We install destination charging for all of these venues. Client funded or fully funded through EV-ME. Both options include a complete turnkey service from survey to aftercare.
