There is no legal interval, and that is the honest answer
Plenty of pages will tell you an EV charger must be inspected annually by law. No regulation says that.
What does exist is a duty. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical systems to be maintained so as to prevent danger. That applies to whoever controls the installation. It deliberately does not name a frequency, because a charger in a coastal car park and a charger in a heated basement do not wear at the same rate.
What the industry has settled on
In practice the answer has converged on twelve months.
Allianz, an insurer, publishes an inspection periodicity table for engineering assets and puts EV charging points at twelve months under those same regulations. Annual inspection is the standard recommendation across the sector, and it is the interval most insurers and managing agents expect to see evidenced.
Twelve months is a sensible default rather than a rule. A site running hard, or one in a difficult environment, earns a shorter interval on its own merits.
Different parts, different cycles
The charger is not the only thing being inspected. Some parts of the installation are checked more often than the unit as a whole.

This is the part most guidance skips. A site that has had an annual charger inspection but no fixed wiring test in eight years is not in the position its records suggest.

What decides your interval
Three things move it.
How hard the chargers work. A depot turning vehicles overnight puts more cycles through the switching gear and the connectors in a month than a visitor bay does in a year.
What a dead unit costs you. On a fleet site an offline charger is a vehicle that does not run in the morning. On a visitor car park it is an inconvenience. The interval should follow the consequence, not the asset.
The environment. Coastal air, road salt, standing water and full sun all shorten the honest interval.
Monitoring changes the question
An annual inspection tells you the charger was working on the day somebody stood in front of it. It says nothing about the other 364.
Where a site is monitored, the visit stops being the only line of defence. Faults surface as data in between, and the inspection becomes what it should be: a test and a record, rather than the only time anyone looks.
