What actually wears out
A charger is a simple thing pretending to be a complicated one. Strip the case off and it is a contactor, some protection, a controller board and a cable. Almost nothing moves.
That is why chargers outlast most of the plant around them. It is also why the failures, when they come, are concentrated in a few places.
Protective devices. The most frequent reason we attend a dead charger is that an RCD or RCBO on the circuit has operated. Sometimes that is a genuine fault. Often it is a device that is more sensitive than the installation warrants.
The cable and connector. On a tethered unit, the cable is handled by people, dropped on the ground, driven over, and left in the weather. The latch inside a connector wears until it stops gripping, and cables locking into the unit and refusing to release are a regular call.
The incoming supply. Rarely mentioned and worth knowing. Chargers carry sensitive electronics, and a voltage spike or disturbance on the supply can knock a unit over or operate a protective device on an installation where the charger itself is sound.
The firmware and the connection. Not wearing parts, but between them a large share of what gets reported as a broken charger. An update lands overnight and quietly breaks a schedule or a tariff integration. Or the unit loses its back office connection and sits fully powered, refusing to authorise.
What does not need much
The things people expect to need attention mostly do not. The enclosure is sealed and rated for outdoor use. The electronics have no service interval. There is nothing to lubricate, top up or replace on a cycle.
Cleaning matters more than it sounds, though not for the reasons people assume. It is not about appearance. A blocked vent or a connector full of grit changes how the unit runs, and a build up of dirt hides the early signs of something worse.

Why “no maintenance” is the expensive option
Chargers rarely fail loudly. A connector latch wears past the point of gripping and the symptom is intermittent charging rather than a dead unit. A protective device that trips once a month looks like bad luck until somebody plots the dates.
None of that announces itself. The first you hear about it is usually a complaint, and by then the unit has probably been degrading for months.
The other cost is the one people forget. On a site nobody checks, a failed charger stays failed until somebody bothers to report it. On a monitored site it is picked up the night it happens.
Domestic is different
Everything above is written for a site somebody has to answer for: a block, a workplace, a depot. A single charger on a house is a different proposition, with a different economic case and usually a different answer.
