What Budget Buys You Now
The regulatory floor did budget buyers a favour. And every home charger worth considering runs at the same 7kW class speed, the £850 unit charges your car exactly as fast as the £1,100 one.

Where the Premium Money Goes
Track record is the honest answer, and the gap is narrowing. The Nexblue Point 2 now connects to both Intelligent Octopus Go and OVO Charge Anytime through direct integrations, newer and less road tested than Ohme’s, but live and confirmed by both suppliers. The Rolec has no charger side tariff integration, so smart dispatch needs a compatible car, or you run a timer tariff like Octopus Go or EDF GoElectric instead. Still cheap overnight miles, slightly less automatic.
App quality and long term software support are the other gap. A charger is a 10 year purchase, and the premium brands have the stronger track record of keeping apps maintained and adding features over the air.

The Ones to Avoid
The genuine risk sits below the value brands, the unbranded imports on marketplace sites. The failure pattern is predictable: the app stops being updated, support does not answer, spare parts do not exist, and the warranty is only as good as the company’s UK presence. A charger with no one behind it is expensive at any price.
Our rule: buy the cheapest charger that fits your tariff, from a brand that will still answer the phone in year five. Sometimes that is the budget unit. Sometimes £150 more buys the integration that saves £200 a year.
