What Closed
Two grants covering fleet EV charging closed in quick succession:
Depot Charging Scheme: closed 28 November 2025. Funded up to 75% of depot EV charging costs, capped at £1 million per organisation. Targeted operators of electric vans, HGVs, and coaches.
EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets: closed 31 March 2026. Paid up to £15,000 per site for cabling and groundworks, plus £350 per active socket. Open to SMEs with fewer than 250 employees.
There is no direct replacement for either scheme. Pending EV Infrastructure Grant applications submitted before the March closure can be claimed by installers until 26 May 2026.
What Replaced It
The Workplace Charging Scheme is now the single OZEV grant for fleet EV charging. The rate was uplifted from £350 to £500 per socket on 1 April 2026.

For a typical depot installing 10 chargers, that is £5,000 in grant funding. For a multi-site fleet operator claiming across the full 40 socket cap, the maximum is £20,000.

What It Means for Fleet Economics
For smaller fleet operators previously using the EV Infrastructure Grant, total funding has reduced. A typical fleet project that combined the Infrastructure Grant and Workplace Charging Scheme could claim up to £29,000 per site. The same project now claims £5,000 from the Workplace Charging Scheme alone.
For larger operators who would have targeted the Depot Charging Scheme, the gap is larger. The £1 million cap on that scheme has no equivalent. Multi-million-pound depot electrification projects now proceed on operational economics rather than grant funding, with the Workplace Charging Scheme as a supplement rather than a major funding source.
Depot charging still delivers a lower cost per kWh than public rapid networks, typically 20 to 40% less. The operational savings on a typical fleet of 20 to 40 vehicles exceed the lost grant value within 12 to 18 months.
How to Maximise the Active Grant
The 40 socket cap across all sites is the key constraint. For multi-site fleet operators, that means portfolio planning rather than per-depot maximisation.
A fleet operator with 40 sockets spread across 5 depots (8 per site) claims the full £20,000 maximum. A fleet operator concentrating 40 sockets at one depot claims the same £20,000 but loses the option to add grant-funded sockets at other sites in the same year.
