How Many EV Chargers Does a Hotel Need?

TL;DR

A working starting ratio is one socket per 10 to 15 rooms, so a 30 room hotel opens with two to four sockets, cabled so doubling later is an afternoon's work. Overnight dwell does the heavy lifting: a 7kW socket fully charges any car by morning, and one socket can serve two guests in an evening with a polite swap. Occupancy, location and your EV guest mix move the number from there.

The Logic Behind the Ratio

Hotel charging is overnight charging, the friendliest pattern there is. Guests arrive, plug in, sleep, and leave full, so speed is irrelevant and rotation is easy. What matters is not stranding an EV guest who booked because your listing said charging, which is why the ratio scales with rooms rather than car park size.

Roadside and destination properties skew higher, drivers pick them because of the chargers. City hotels with contract parking skew lower. Pubs and restaurants think in dwell time instead: two sockets serve a steady rotation of ninety minute visits.

Cable for the Curve

EV ownership is still climbing, so the honest sizing answer is a phased design. Install the sockets today’s demand justifies, and put the cabling, containment and switchgear in for twice that while the trench is open. Second phase sockets then cost a fraction of the first, and the 40 socket grant allowance leaves headroom for the return visit.

The signal to expand is simple and the platform reports it: utilisation. When your sockets run busy most evenings, add the next pair before reviews mention queuing.

Does Anywhere Need Rapid Charging?

Rarely, for accommodation. Rapid hardware costs multiples more and suits sites selling twenty minute stops, not overnight stays. The exception is a large destination venue with heavy day visitor flow, where one faster unit alongside the overnight sockets can earn its keep. The survey settles it with your visitor pattern rather than a brochure.
