Grid paperwork is one piece of the job. See the whole process on the battery storage installation page.
What G98 and G99 actually are
These are the rules that govern connecting generation and storage to the local electricity network. The names come from the Energy Networks Association.
G98 is the light touch route for fully type tested systems up to 16 amps per phase. That is 3.68kW on a single phase supply, or around 11kW across a three phase one, which typically means domestic scale kit. The installer fits it, then notifies the network operator afterwards.
G99 is the full route for generation and storage above that 16 amp limit, and in practice that is where almost all commercial battery storage sits. It needs a formal application, a network assessment, and written approval before the system is energised. The battery cannot legally run until that approval lands.
Why commercial systems usually fall under G99
The route depends on the total generation and storage capacity at the premises and whether the supply is single phase or three phase. The boundary is 16 amps per phase. A battery sized to do real commercial work, cutting peak charges or backing up critical systems, is almost always above it.
Within G99 there are lighter and heavier routes depending on size. Systems up to 17kW single phase or 50kW three phase can use the simplified application form. Some smaller projects also qualify for a fast track G99 route, usually with export capped through an approved limitation device. Larger schemes need the standard application, sometimes with extra network studies. We work out which applies against your site and take it from there.
How we handle it for you
Grid applications, export limits and three phase supplies are our day to day work. We deal with the network operator directly.
We scope the export rating and duty cycle, confirm whether the site is single or three phase, then submit the correct application and manage it through to approval. Network operators can take several weeks to respond, and they may cap export or ask for reinforcement, so we build that into the programme from the start.
You do not fill in a single form. Our own engineers design and install the system to standard, and the connection paperwork is part of the price, not an extra you chase yourself.
Once approved, we set up monitoring and hand over a system that is ready to run. If you want the numbers first, the commercial battery storage cost page covers pricing.
