Why a Pod Point charger will not connect to wifi
Four causes cover nearly all of these, and the first one accounts for more than the rest together.
It cannot see a 2.4 GHz network. Pod Point chargers use 2.4 GHz only. They do not connect on 5 GHz. Modern routers often broadcast both under a single name and hand devices whichever they prefer, and a charger that gets pushed onto 5 GHz simply will not appear.
The router changed. A new router, a new provider, or a password change leaves the charger holding credentials that no longer work. It does not tell you. It just goes white and stays there.
The signal does not reach it. Chargers live on outside walls, in garages, behind brick. A phone standing in the drive is not a fair test, because your phone has a much better aerial than the charger does.
Something on the network blocks it. Mesh systems and newer security settings are the usual culprits. Pod Point specifically flags Google Nest wifi as incompatible, because of the security standard it uses.
What happens to charging when the wifi drops
This is the part worth understanding, because it explains why so many people do not notice for months.
An offline Pod Point still charges the car. It falls back to charging as soon as you plug in. What stops is the smart side. Schedules do not run, and charge data is not recorded.
So the failure is invisible at the charger and expensive at the meter. The car charges the moment you get home, at whatever your peak rate is, instead of waiting for the cheap window. The first sign for most people is the electricity bill, not the light. If your bill jumped and nobody can explain it, go and look at the colour of your charger.
How to reconnect a Pod Point to wifi
The order matters. Doing this in the wrong sequence is why people end up trying it five times.
- Sort the network first. If your router broadcasts one name for both bands, split them so the 2.4 GHz network has its own name, or temporarily switch the 5 GHz band off while you connect.
- Have the details to hand. The network name, the password, and your charger’s identifier from its label or the app.
- Follow the connection flow in the Pod Point app for a Solo 3 or 3S, or the connection guide for an older Solo, which uses the charger’s own hotspot rather than the app.
- Give it time. These units take a few minutes to come back and report in. People often declare it failed before it has finished.
- Reset once if it will not take. Off at the breaker, back on, then try again from step three.
Older units are a special case. A Solo installed in 2017 or earlier cannot pair with the Pod Point app at all, so there is nothing to reconnect on your phone. If yours is that old, no amount of app troubleshooting will work, and that is not a fault.
Signal strength that is actually good enough
Pod Point publishes real numbers for this, which is useful and unusual. The connection wants a ping under 100 milliseconds and a download over 5 megabits per second, measured at the charger rather than in the house. Powerline adapters are best avoided, because they put noise on the wiring the charger sits on.
There is a simpler test that gets you most of the way. Stand at the charger with your phone, turn mobile data off so only wifi is working, and try to play a video. If it plays without stalling, the signal is probably enough. If it struggles, the charger is living with worse than that, because your phone has the better aerial.
Where the signal is weak but present, a mesh point or an access point nearer the charger usually settles it, and it is cheaper than any work on the unit. Where there is genuinely nothing reaching the charger, the honest answer is that no amount of reconnecting will hold, and the charger will keep dropping off.
When it is the charger and not the network
If the network is right, the signal is good, and the unit still will not join, the radio inside it may have failed.
That is the point where this stops being a settings job. When we look at one, we want to know whether other devices hold a connection in the same spot, whether the charger has ever connected since the router changed, and how old the unit is. Age matters on this brand more than most, because Pod was an early manufacturer and there are a lot of Solos out there beyond the working life we would expect.
On an old unit that is out of warranty and will no longer hold a connection, our honest answer is usually that replacing it beats chasing the radio. You are otherwise paying to repair the smart features of a charger that has already given you its years.
