What a red light on a Pod Point charger means
Red means the charger has stopped itself. Flashing red is a fault triggered by a safety measure, and that distinction is the whole of this page. The unit has not necessarily broken. Something made it decide charging was not safe, and it stopped.
That something is usually outside the charger. A Pod Point sits at the end of a circuit, watches its own supply and monitors the current your house is drawing. Any of those can put it into safety mode while the unit itself is in perfect health.
Solid red and flashing red are different
Flashing red is the fault state, and it is the one most owners see. A solid red on a Solo is worth photographing rather than guessing at, because the light behaviour has changed across model generations and a still photo of a flashing light looks identical to a solid one.
This is the single most common mistake we see when people describe a fault over the phone. Watch the light for ten seconds before you describe it. Flashing and solid send us looking in completely different places.
The energy clamp, and why a meter change causes this
This is the one we find most, and it catches people out because the charger was working perfectly that morning.
Your Pod Point has an energy clamp, a sensor that clips around the incoming supply cable at your meter or fuse board. It is part of Auto Power Balancing, the system that stops the charger overloading your house when the oven and the immersion are already running. It is not an optional extra. Without it working correctly the charger will not run.
When a smart meter is fitted, the technician has to get at your meter tails. To do that the clamp usually has to come off. Pod Point acknowledges this in its own troubleshooting, saying a technician may have disconnected or moved the clamp and put the charger into safety mode.
What we see on site adds detail to that. The clamp does not just go missing. It gets put back the wrong way round, so it reads current flowing the wrong way, or it gets left hanging in the cupboard, or it is clipped back over the outer sheath rather than around the single core it is supposed to sense. All three look tidy to somebody who does not know what the clamp is for. All three give you a red light.
So the first question to ask is not about the charger. It is whether anyone has been at your meter or fuse board recently. A smart meter swap, a new consumer unit, a solar install, an electrician tracing a fault. If the answer is yes, that is where to look first, and it costs nothing to check.
Take a photo of the clamp and the electrics around it before you call anybody. It is the first thing we ask for, and it is the first thing Pod’s support team asks for too, so having it ready saves a round trip either way.
Red light when charging, and red that clears on its own
A red that appears part way through a charge and clears on its own points at the supply rather than the unit.
Every EV charger sold in the UK has to disconnect the car if the supply voltage leaves a safe band, because voltage outside that band is how the wiring regulations detect a lost earth on a PME supply. Chargers are the most sensitive thing in the house by design. A kettle does not measure the supply. Your charger does, and it is the first thing to complain when the network drifts.
If your red comes and goes at the same time most evenings, that pattern is worth recording. It points away from the charger entirely.
How to reset a Pod Point charger after a red light
There is no reset button on a Solo. The reset is at the fuse board.
- Unplug the cable from the car and from the charger, if yours is the socketed type.
- Find the RCBO that feeds the charger. It usually sits in a white box near your distribution board or meter, with a green or yellow “EV Charger” sticker on it.
- Switch it off. Note that an RCBO works the opposite way to a light switch. Up is on, down is off.
- Wait, then switch it back on and let the charger come up before you plug in again.
Do this once. If the red comes straight back, stop. A charger that trips again immediately is telling you something real, and switching it on repeatedly wears the breaker out, which turns one fault into two.
When red is the charger itself
A red that survives a proper reset, with the clamp confirmed correct and the supply reading normally, is a fault in the unit.
When we attend one, we do not start at the charger. We test for voltage on both sides of the breaker or RCBO that feeds it, because that one test tells us whether the protective device itself has failed. Then we work towards the charger. If there is voltage at the unit and it still sits red, the fault is inside it. If there is not, we work back through the isolator to the board. Most of the calls we get about a dead or red Pod Point turn out to be something upstream of the charger rather than the charger itself.
Age matters here more with Pod Point than with most brands. Pod was one of the earliest UK manufacturers, so there is a large population of older Solos still on walls, well past the five to ten year working life we would expect. Units installed in 2017 or earlier cannot pair with the Pod Point app at all, and hardware made before mid 2017 may not have the neutral failure detection circuit that later units carry. That is a protection difference, not a missing feature.
On a unit of that age, out of warranty and repeatedly tripping, our honest answer is usually to replace rather than repair. We would rather tell you that than sell you a repair on something that has reached the end.
