Do Home Batteries Qualify for 0% VAT in the UK?

TL;DR

Yes, when supplied and fitted by an installer. Home battery installations qualify for 0% VAT in England, Scotland and Wales until 31 March 2027. That covers standalone batteries without solar, retrofits, and batteries fitted with a solar system. After that date the rate is set to rise to 5%. There is no separate application. Your installer applies the 0% rate on the invoice.

What the 0% VAT Rate Covers

Since 1 February 2024, HMRC has treated home battery storage as an energy saving material. That change removed VAT from qualifying domestic installations in England, Scotland and Wales.

The rate applies to the battery, the inverter where it forms part of the system, and the installation work itself. You do not need solar panels to qualify. A battery fitted on its own, charged from cheap night rates, is covered in the same way as one paired with a roof array.

One condition matters. The relief is tied to installation. Buy a battery on its own from a retailer and fit it yourself, and the unit carries standard 20% VAT. Supplied and installed together as one job, the qualifying work is zero rated. Northern Ireland sits under different VAT rules, so the zero rate does not apply there in the same way.

The saving is not small. On a typical home battery install, removing 20% VAT keeps a meaningful sum in your pocket. It is a tax relief, not a rebate, so there is nothing to claim back later. The correct rate appears on your quote from the start.

The Deadline and What Happens After

The 0% rate runs until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027, HMRC rules currently set qualifying home battery installations at 5% VAT, not the standard 20%. That is still a reduced rate, but 0% is the better window.

This is worth planning around. If a battery is on your list for the next couple of years, fitting it before the deadline locks in the full relief. We handle the paperwork and the correct VAT treatment as part of every home install.

Are There Grants for Home Batteries?

This is the common follow up question, and the honest answer helps you plan. There is no nationwide government grant that pays a cash subsidy for a standard home battery in England. The main support is the 0% VAT relief itself.

Some targeted schemes exist for low income or vulnerable households, and these focus on broader energy efficiency rather than batteries on their own. If you pair a battery with solar, you can also earn Smart Export Guarantee payments for the power you export, though that is a payment for exported electricity, not a grant for the battery.

One change is coming. The government’s Warm Homes Loan Scheme is expected to launch from late 2026. It is a loan, not a grant. Participating lenders will offer finance for home energy upgrades at reduced interest rates, with borrowing for battery storage capped at £15,000 and standalone batteries included. There is nothing to apply for yet, so treat anyone collecting applications today with caution. We will keep this page updated as lenders launch.

So the picture today is simple. No general grant, a genuine tax saving that runs out in March 2027, and cheaper borrowing on the way.
